Roles

Design Engineer

an engineer who designs products and parts in CAD and manages the engineering changes that flow into manufacturing and the ERP

Your job, minus the screen work

You define the product: models, drawings, tolerances, materials. Every change you make then has to travel from CAD or PLM into the ERP, and that trip is mostly retyping, report running and chasing.

Where your week goes

  • Digging through email for change requests nobody logged
  • Running where-used reports level by level to see what a change touches
  • Retyping CAD BOM lines into the ERP and fixing units that did not convert
  • Chasing the routing update after the BOM already went live
  • Answering "what changed?" from planning, purchasing and quality, one by one
  • Building the change board packet the night before

What an agent takes over

What stays with you

  • The design itself: models, tolerances, analysis and prototypes

  • Deciding whether a request becomes a change at all

  • Failure investigations and customer technical conversations

  • Every signature on a change order, deviation or concession

Apps you already juggle

CAD, PLM or PDM, ERP, Outlook, Excel, SharePoint, QMS, Teams.

  • CAD
  • PLM
  • PDM
  • ERP
  • Outlook

  • Teams

A week, before and after

Before

  • Search the inbox for promised requests.
  • Retype the BOM, one line at a time.
  • Chase the routing update.
  • Build the board packet at midnight.

After

  • Open a triage queue with every request logged and its impact attached.
  • Approve a change list and watch it land with zero differences.
  • Walk into the board meeting with the packet ready.
  • Spend the time designing.
